High-performing teams aren't simply made up of talented people.

They succeed because those people are clear about what they're working towards, understand how they need to work together and are able to make the most of their individual strengths.

Think about any successful sporting team. The players may have exceptional individual ability, but talent alone doesn't win matches. What matters is how well those individuals come together as a team.

The same is true in organisations.

So what creates the conditions for high performance? Here are three things worth paying attention to.

1. A strong sense of collective purpose

It sounds obvious, doesn't it?

But having a purpose and having a shared sense of purpose are two different things.
A high-performing team understands what it's trying to achieve, why it matters and how its individual contribution helps make it happen.

The strongest sense of purpose goes beyond a financial target or a statement on a website. It gives people something meaningful to work towards and helps them make better decisions when priorities compete.

Ask yourself:

Could everyone in your team explain, in their own words, what you're trying to achieve and why it matters?

If the answer is no, there's work to do.

2. Values that show up in behaviour

Most organisations have a set of values.

The real test is what happens when things get difficult.

High-performing teams don't just talk about collaboration, accountability or respect.

You can see those values in the way people behave.

They share information rather than protecting their territory.

They challenge each other without making it personal.

They take responsibility when things go wrong rather than looking for someone to blame.

And they put the interests of the team alongside their own individual goals.

In a sporting team, you see this in the decisions players make in the moment. The player who could take the glory may instead make the pass because they know it's the better option for the team.

In organisations, high performance often comes down to similar choices.

What behaviours do you see when your team is under pressure – and do they reflect the values you say matter?

3. Play to strengths

High performance doesn't come from turning everyone into an all-rounder.

It comes from understanding what people do best and creating the conditions for them to use those strengths effectively.

This isn't about ignoring weaknesses. It's about recognising that people are more likely to perform at their best when their roles, responsibilities and opportunities allow them to use their natural capabilities.

And it goes beyond individual strengths.

High-performing teams understand the different strengths around the table and how they complement one another. They know who is good at generating ideas, who spots the risks, who brings structure, who builds relationships and who challenges the thinking.

The result isn't a group of identical high performers.

It's a team whose strengths combine to create something greater than any individual could achieve alone.

Do you know what each person in your team does best – and are you making the most of those strengths collectively?

Leadership is everyone’s responsibility

Creating the conditions for high performance is a leadership responsibility.

But leadership doesn't sit solely with the person at the top.

Every team member has a part to play in creating the culture, behaviours and relationships that enable the team to perform.

The leader might set the direction and create the conditions, but high-performing teams depend on people taking ownership, making good decisions, supporting one another and having the conversations that need to be had.

Ultimately, high performance isn't about having the best individuals. It's about creating a team where people understand the purpose, live the values and make the most of their strengths – together.
